4 days Mt. Toubkal trekking from Marrakesh

  • Mt. Toubkal is the highest peak in the north of Africa (4,167 m). Climbing Mt. Toubkal during May to Oct dosen't require climing ability.. It can be steep and slippery and altitude sickness could be a problem. Sturdy boots, windproof clothing and torch are required. Also trekking poles are helpful on the scree. A qualified local guide can be hired as well as mules to carry your equipment and food. In summer it is very dry, but conditions are freezing at 3,500 m and above. you should consider this.
  • Mt. Toubkal Day 1
  • You can drive from Marrakech to Imuril (1,700 m) in about 90 minutes. There are a lot of pensions, lodges and teahouses at Imuril. You can get food supplies and all the equipment for climbing there. A sleeping bag is rented. You can walk at leisure pace for Aroumd (1,900 m) from Imuril.

  • Mt. Toubkal Day 2 ＜staying a refuge, 5 hr's walk＞
  • The today's destination is the refuge at 3,027 m. You cross a flood plain near Aroumd and climb up the left slope of the valley to Sidi Chamharouch, which is a Muslim shrine.

  • At Sidi Chamharouch the path goes over a stream and you climb a steep scree slope for around 3 hrs, until you reach the refuges.

  • There are two refuges run by the French Climbing Club, old Neltner Refuge and new Refuge du Toubkal , and also the Gite Camping Les Mouflons Refuge.

  • Mt. Toubkal Day 3 ＜staying Aroumd＞
  • 5 hr's walk to the summit from the refuge and less than 5 hr's walk from the summit to Aroumd
  • You leave the refuge for the summit in the early morning. From the refuge a path crosses the stream, climbs a steep scree slope to the east and enters a valley (corrie), then climbs another steep slope to reach a col (Tizi'n'Toubkal at 3,940m). At the col the route turns left (northwards) to the summit ridge of Jbel Toubkal. The 4,167m summit is crowned with a curious pyramidal metal frame and the views take in most of the Atlas and Anti-Atlas Mountains. You return by the same route through the refuge to Aroumd.

  • You walk down to Imuril and drive back to Marrakech.<
